STEVE KUHN: “Ecstasy.” Used vintage LP in Mint/Mint condition. ECM Records LP Catalog # ECM-1-1058; 1975

Condition: I really lucked out—and you can too!—with this LP. A lousy batch of vinyl can really mess up a recital of largely quiet music played by a solo acoustic instrument, but this vinyl is greatly superior to average US product. The jacket has just little aesthetic flaws which I guarantee existed when I bought this record factory-sealed many, many years ago. I think that when I played it to digitize the audio in late September 2026 that was the first time I’d ever played it! Original soft poly inner sleeve included.

Behind the Music: As indicated above in “Condition,” this project is solo acoustic piano. The music is “impressionist,” surely inspired by Debussy and Ravel. Side Two opens with 12 minutes of “Thoughts of a Gentleman—The Saga of Harrison Crabfeathers.” This composition would later be taken up by Carla Bley, arranged for her big band. The briefest of the five cuts runs just shy of 4 1/2 minutes; the others tend to be more extended. The music here is simply gorgeous, without descending into “Smooth Jazz” territory. Thank goodness!
