STEVE KUHN and Ecstasy: Motility. Used vintage LP in Near Mint/Near Mint condition. ECM Records LP Catalog # ECM-1-1094; 1977

Condition: I was tempted to grade this vinyl Mint, but I do grade conservatively. The record came from the pressing plant in a paper inner sleeve with soft plastic inner lining. A different kind of plastic than what ECM was using as its standard in the 1970s. I noticed that the LP exhibited a good dose of “static cling” to this liner material when I removed it from the inner sleeve, and I believe it was the use of this plastic that left marks on surfaces of the record. These typical aesthetic blemishes don’t affect the recorded sound. The jacket has but a few minor flaws, like slight corner wrinkles, that surely were there when I bought this LP still factory-sealed.

Behind the Music: Doubtless it was the success of Mr. Kuhn’s solo piano project called Ecstasy (1975) that inspired him, or ECM, to name the band on this album Ecstasy. They consist of Steve Slagle, saxophones and flute; Harvie S (still known as Harvie Swartz at the time), bass; and a drummer I was not familiar with, Michael Smith. Two of the nine selections were written by Harvie, the balance by the leader. This is a typically very high quality ECM recording, produced by label chieftain Manfred Eicher and recorded in Germany. At this point in time, Polydor had taken over manufacture and distribution of ECM from Warner Bros. (which had been pressing the product bound for American market in US plants, with sometimes less than great batches of vinyl!).
