VTG Sear 1975 Fall Winter Catalog with Page 602 & Zoot Fenster 45 Vinyl - Combo:
$129.99
This listing is for both the the Sears fall/winter/1975 catalog and the Zoot Fenster (country singer Jack Barlow)“The Man on Page 602” / “Vinegar in My Wine” 45 Vinyl Record.1. The Sears 1975 Fall/Winter catalog
- The 1975 Sears Fall/Winter catalog was one of the enormous general merchandise catalogs that Sears distributed to American households. In the midst of its thousands of pages of clothing, appliances, toys, household goods, and other merchandise was page 602, which contained an advertisement for men's underwear.
- The photograph showed two male models wearing underwear—one in jockey-style shorts and another in boxer shorts. The boxer-short model became the center of an extraordinary controversy because, in the printed catalog photograph, a dark mark or blemish appeared in the area of his crotch. Readers interpreted the mark as an exposed part of the model's anatomy.
- The photograph consequently became something of an American mail-order-catalog scandal/urban legend. Sears reportedly maintained that what people thought they were seeing was merely a printing or photographic blemish, not an intentional exposure. Sears also declined to identify the model.
- Interestingly, comparisons with an earlier Sears catalog image have been used to argue that the notorious mark was indeed a printing/reproduction artifact rather than the model actually exposing himself.
2. Zoot Fenster - “The Man on Page 602” / “Vinegar in My Wine” 45 Vinyl Record
- “The Man on Page 602” was a 1975 novelty-country record (45) performed by country singer Jack Barlow under the pseudonym Zoot Fenster, inspired by the notorious men's-underwear photograph on page 602 of Sears' 1975 Fall/Winter catalog.
- The episode inspired a novelty country song, “The Man on Page 602.” Three writers—Helen Ann Fischer, Eugene F. Strasser, and George Dodson Winters—are credited with writing it.
- The song turned the catalog photograph into a humorous country narrative: the singer describes discovering the supposedly scandalous picture while looking through the Sears Fall/Winter catalog and jokingly fantasizes about being the mysterious man on page 602.
- The record was issued in 1975 as:Zoot Fenster — “The Man on Page 602” / “Vinegar in My Wine”
- The original 7-inch release is documented as Antique/IRDA 106, from October 1975; other listings also show an IRDA 105 issue.
- The song wasn't merely an obscure novelty record, either. It reached No. 30 on the Billboard country chart in 1975, making the bizarre Sears-catalog episode an actual country-music chart hit.
- The result is a wonderfully strange chain of events: Sears underwear advertisement → mysterious/possibly accidental photographic blemish → national gossip and urban legend → novelty country song → charting record → Jack Barlow temporarily becoming “Zoot Fenster.”
