2. DESCRIPTION

A wonderful piece of early Appalachian and pre-war country history from Roy Harvey and Posey Rorer, two musicians closely tied to the world of Charlie Poole and the North Carolina Ramblers.

Harvey was a singer, guitarist, railroad man, and important figure in early Appalachian string-band recording, while Posey Rorer was the celebrated fiddler associated with Charlie Poole’s North Carolina Ramblers. Together, Harvey and Rorer helped preserve the sound of the Southern string-band tradition at the moment commercial country music was first taking shape. Roy Harvey’s work has since been recognized as part of the foundation from which later country, bluegrass, and old-time music developed.

This original Columbia record pairs “When the Bees Are in the Hive” with “Daisies Won’t Tell.” Both sides were recorded on May 12, 1927, and the pairing appears in Columbia’s own 1927 release listings. Discographical sources identify Posey Rorer on fiddle, making this a particularly appealing example of early Appalachian vocal and fiddle music.

For collectors of early hillbilly, old-time, Appalachian, and pre-war country records, this is the real thing: an original Columbia shellac from the first generation of commercially recorded country music, featuring musicians directly connected to one of the most influential string-band traditions of the 1920s.

CONDITION

This nearly 100-year-old record shows moderate visible surface wear, including scattered scratches, scuffs, and handling marks across both sides.

The Columbia labels remain readable, though there is noticeable wear and paper loss around the center spindle area. There are also several hand-etched markings in the dead wax and surrounding area, a recurring characteristic of the Detroit collection from which this record came.

Included is the vintage Columbia paper sleeve shown in the photographs. The sleeve displays substantial age-related wear, creasing, edge tears, and wear around the center opening, but it remains a very appealing period accompaniment to the record.

PROVENANCE

This record comes from a remarkable private Detroit collection assembled over several decades by a devoted audiophile and serious crate-digger active around the Detroit music scene from roughly the 1950s through the 1990s.

He accumulated thousands of records spanning blues, hillbilly, rockabilly, early rock & roll, garage, psych, soul, R&B, regional recordings, promos, private pressings, and musical oddities. Stories associated with the collection suggest he may also have been involved at various times as a DJ or promoter, but what is certain is that he spent decades digging deeply into recorded music.

One distinctive feature of the collection is the hand-etched identifying marks found in the dead wax of many records, including this one. Those markings have become something of a fingerprint for this extraordinary collection.
