Those matrix numbers are confirmed by discographical sources, and the numbers visible in the dead wax on your copy are consistent with them. “Pay Your Furniture Man” was recorded August 3, 1928, and “Women Spend Too Much Money” August 4, 1928, in Atlanta.

Rev. J. M. Gates was one of the most prolific and important recorded African-American preachers of the 1920s and 1930s. His records combined preaching, topical social commentary, congregational responses and gospel singing, making them valuable documents of early recorded Black religious culture.

This particular coupling is especially memorable because Gates addresses everyday economic behavior rather than purely theological subjects. The session personnel include Sisters Jordan and Norman; “Pay Your Furniture Man” also features Deacon Leon Davis, with an unidentified guitarist documented for the August 3 session.

Provenance

This copy comes from the private collection of a legendary Detroit crate-digger and one-time DJ. The record clearly shows handwritten/lightly etched collector markings in the dead-wax area, which fit the cataloging/preservation habits you described. There is also old tape on the sleeve, though I would describe that as sleeve preservation rather than claim tape was applied to the record itself.

It is:

This particular record is, of course, an original 78 RPM rather than a 45, but it fits beautifully into the broader story of a serious collection of early American roots music.
