Metallica Creeping Death 12" Vinyl EP 1984 Original MFN 12 KUT 112 France VG+/VG
Original 1984 French pressing and English-printed sleeve of Metallica's "Creeping Death" 12-inch vinyl EP on Music For Nations.
Catalog number 12 KUT 112 (see deadwax etching in photo #3).
Matrix Runout Identifiers:
Side A (Runout Etched): MPO 12 KUT 112 A1 tim tom cbs
Side B (Runout Etched): MPO 12 KUT 112 B1 TY
MPO (see photo #4): This confirms the record was physically stamped at the MPO (Moulages et Plastiques de l'Ouest) pressing plant in Averton, France. When Music For Nations first released the "Creeping Death" 12" EP on November 23, 1984, the UK indie label did not have its own local pressing plant. They contracted the master lacquer cutting to CBS Studios in London (hence the tim tom cbs signature in the dead wax) but sent the metal parts to the MPO plant in France to physically stamp the vinyl. Original 1984 French MPO cuts are known to have superior sound dynamics compared to later reissues.
tim tom cbs (Side A) (see photo #3): This indicates that the lacquer for Side A was cut by the legendary mastering engineer Tim Young (who often signed his work as "TimTom") at CBS Studios in London.
The jacket matches the true first-run identifier perfectly: it was printed in England but lacks the "Made in England" text stamp on the back cover that Music For Nations added to later 1985 and late-80s represses.
Because the very first batch of records hitting UK and European store shelves in late 1984 were these exact French MPO imports, this record is a genuine, certified 1984 original first pressing.
Metallica’s Creeping Death 12" EP—released on November 23, 1984, by Music for Nations (catalog number 12 KUT 112)—is a cornerstone collectible in thrash metal history. It served as the sole commercial single for their landmark second album, Ride the Lightning.
The EP featured two rare cover songs—Diamond Head's "Am I Evil?" and Blitzkrieg's "Blitzkrieg". These tracks were virtually unavailable elsewhere for years and laid the groundwork for Metallica's later Garage Inc. covers project.
The central bridge of "Creeping Death" incorporates a riff Kirk Hammett wrote as a 16-year-old in Exodus ("Die by His Hand"), cementing a legendary live chant ("Die! Die! Die!") that remains a staple of Metallica concerts.
The song's title and concept were inspired by the final plague scene in the film The Ten Commandments, after bassist Cliff Burton remarked, "Whoa – it's like creeping death".
