CUSTOMER REVIEWAfter releasing the unlistenable "Rock The Flock" in 1984, Messiah Prophet returned in 1986 for "Master Off The Metal." A much better album, this one was noteworthy because few Christian bands were playing this style of music back then.
Musically this is fairly straight-ahead 80's commercial metal with a bit of a 70's vibe. M.P. have a sound somewhat similar to older Def Leppard, but without the latter band's production wizardry and (of course) budget. They also sound a bit remniscent of fellow Christian bands Leviticus (Sweden), Zion (South Dakota), and Stryper (California).
Lyrics are incredibly bold on top of some catchy melodies, which I think is why this one has endured as a favorite with the faithful over the years. The strongest songs here are the aggressive opener "Hit & Run," the title track, the riff-heavy "Fear No Evil," power ballad "Battle Cry," and closer "Voice That's Calling." The rest are not musically as strong but have their moments, particularly "For Whom The Bell Tolls," whose lyrics are based on Psalm 23.
Overall this album may not be the best musically from this time period, but it is considered a classic in the Christian metal world and it certainly has it's charms. I listen to some of the songs now and again, as it brings back memories of when I used to publish an underground heavy metal fanzine (I also reviewed this in 1986, in my fanzine).
