A child prodigy, Felix Mendelssohn is considered one of Europe's greatest composers. A virtuoso conductor and pianist, he was a respected all-round musician for whom Robert Schumann had great friendship and admiration. This boxed set offers a panorama of Mendelssohn's genius, from his masterpieces to lesser-known works.

This is an impressive and beautifully packaged set in a sturdy box with a beautiful portrait of Mendelssohn on the front of the box.The portrait is worth a mention. It is by Theodor Hildebrandt (1808-1874) and was painted in 1847. In the background of the portrait is a display of pictures painted by Mendelssohn himself. I did not know that Felix was an accomplished artist as well as composer. A very gifted man!

Each disc comes in an individual sleeve, each beautifully decorated with a superb piece of art work.

There is a very informative booklet accompanying the set. It contains a list of the artwork on the cd covers with details of the pictures (very useful), also an index of all the works in the set, listed by title with the relevant disc number on which they are to be found (again, very useful).
