Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Il Sogno di Scipione, K. 126

This 2-CD set features Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's 1771 dramatic serenade (azione teatrale) Il sogno di Scipione (Scipio's Dream), a complete performance based on a libretto by Pietro Metastasio. Written when the composer was fifteen years old, the allegorical narrative follows the Roman general Scipio Aemilianus as he falls into a deep sleep and is visited in a dream by the competing personified goddesses of Fortune and Constancy. Confronted by his ancestors in Elysium, Scipio must choose which virtue will guide his path.

Ensemble & Production

The production is directed by conductor Ian Page, leading the Choir and Orchestra of Classical Opera. This 2017 studio recording is part of their long-term complete Mozart opera cycle, performed with period-aware performance practices. The vocal distribution features a cast of three sopranos and three tenors handling the technical demands of the extended baroque-style da capo and sonata-form arias.
