This product is an extremely rare and ancient Chinese estate record featuring a unique collaboration of artists and composers such as Ellie Mao, Anna Mi Lee, The Hong Kong Blind Choir, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Stephen Cheng. Released by Folkways Records, the LP titled "Ellie Mao: An Anthology of Chinese Folk Songs" showcases a collection of Chinese folk songs in stereo format, with a 12" vinyl record.


The record also features performances by the Taiwan University Chorus and is housed in a cardboard sleeve. With a mix of folk and classical genres, this historic record is a treasure for any music collector or enthusiast of Chinese music.




Historical Context

This rare collection of LPs reflect the post-1949 Chinese diaspora music scene in the US, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Artists trained in Western conservatories (Juilliard, etc.) performed and recorded Chinese folk and art songs for both Chinese communities and Western audiences interested in “world music” or ethnography.

Labels such as Folkways, Monitor, Concert Hall Society, and Taiwanese labels (e.g., Four Seas) issued them. Themes range from rural folk songs and regional dialects to patriotic/choral works and sacred music. Many preserve material that was scare and nonaccessible from mainland China during that period.
