Hatis Noit — Aura — CD — 2022 — Erased Tapes Records

The acclaimed debut album from Hatis Noit, Japanese vocal artist and one of the most singular voices in contemporary music. Released June 24, 2022 on Erased Tapes Records — the prestigious London label home to Nils Frahm, Ólafur Arnalds, and Anna Meredith.

Astonishingly, all eight pieces on Aura were created using Noit's voice alone — drawing on Gagaku (Japanese classical music), Gregorian and Bulgarian chanting, operatic tradition, and avant-garde vocal technique. The vocals were recorded in Berlin, then reamplified in a church in Hackney, London to capture the acoustic space of live performance. Produced by Robert Raths. Mixed by Marta Salogni.

The album title was inspired by German philosopher Walter Benjamin's concept of the fundamental essence of art — strongest in its original, unrepeatable form. Highlights include "Jomon," which channels the fierce energy of Japan's prehistoric Jomon culture, and "Inori," featuring a field recording taken one kilometre from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant — dedicated to those lost in the 2011 tsunami.

The album has attracted reworks from Laraaji, William Basinski, Jlin, Armand Hammer, Alex Somers, and Matthew Herbert (released 2025). Hatis Noit has performed at WOMAD, Rewire, Le Guess Who?, Big Ears Festival, and MUTEK worldwide.

Critical Reception: "Bold, impressive debut" — NPR | "One of the most singular albums I've heard for a long time" 9/10 — Clash | 8/10 — Loud and Quiet | 4/5 — The Skinny | Praised by Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC 6 Music
