"Having cherished Enesco's own 1943 recording of his 3rd violin sonata with Dinu Lipatti, it is a pleasure to renew its acquaintance in a splendid modern recording by a young brother & sister duo, who have researched the oeuvre thoroughly and demonstrate, by playing everything by memory, their close rapport and complete assimilation of George Enesco's complex idiom," praises Classical.net. This recording by the Orfeo Duo, consisting of violinist Vita Wallace and pianist Ishmael Wallace, captures the essence of Enesco's work with a fresh and modern interpretation.
Georges Enesco, a remarkable composer and violinist, is celebrated for his unique blend of Romanticism and modernism, where gypsy fiddling and classical techniques converge. This recording features his best-known sonata alongside two previously unrecorded works: "Piece sur le nom de Faure" and "Aubade." The music is deeply influenced by French Impressionism and is saturated with the rich tones of Romanian gypsy music. Classics Today notes, "Romanticism and modernism, gypsy fiddling and classical techniques converge in moody meanderings, full of voluptuous melodies and harmonic volatility."
The Orfeo Duo's performance is a testament to their lifelong musical partnership. Vita and Ishmael Wallace have been playing together since childhood, a fact that is evident in their rare and profound musical rapport. Richard Goode commends them, stating, "They are a remarkable duo, with qualities of serious musicianship and interpretive depth that are very rare these days." Their performances have graced stages across the United States, Latin America, Italy, and Canada, and they have spent several summers honing their craft at the Banff Centre for the Arts.
This recording is not just a tribute to Enesco's genius but also a showcase of the Orfeo Duo's exceptional talent and dedication to their art.
