"AL JOLSON: Wondrous Rarities Curated by Chip Deffaa" -- Brand New CD :
$18.00
Al Jolson (1885-1950) was known in his day as "the World's Greatest Entertainer." And this brand new CD--77 minutes in length--offers ample proof of why he merited that billing. You'll hear some of Jolson's most famous songs, like "California, Here I Come," "Swanee," "My Mammy," and "April Showers." But these are not his oft-reissued studio recordings from the 1940s; these are much rarer performances of those timeless songs.
You'll hear some unique performances available on no other CDs. The album includes vintage studio recordings and "live" radio broadcasts, along with some excellent early Jolson film soundtrack performances that have recently come into the public domain.
A master song stylist, Jolson liked to say he never sang a song exactly the same way twice. And this set includes contrasting, variant versions of such songs as "Who Cares," "I'd Climb the Highest Mountain," and "Back in Your Own Back Yard."
The CD includes Jolson's recordings of four different songs composed by George Gershwin (whom Jolson discovered). The CD also includes songs by Jerome Kern, Walter Donaldson, Vincent Youmans, Yip Harburg and Burton Lane.
Due to the age of the original recordings (some of which are over 100 years old), audio fidelity is variable. But audio-restoration expert Scott Gordon, who's newly remastered the recordings, has worked hard to give us the best possible sound.
The recordings have been curated by noted Jolson authority Chip Deffaa, who has curated such previous releases (all of which are available on ) as "Al Jolson's Broadway," "Al Jolson Sings Irving Berlin," "Al Jolson--King of Broadway," "Al Jolson Rediscovered," "Al Jolson--From Broadway to Hollywood," "Al Jolson, Eddie Cantor, and Jimmy Durante Give their Regards to Broadway," and "Chip Deffaa's Broadway and Vaudeville Legends."
Released January 17, 2026, "Al Jolson--Wondrous Rarities," is the 50th album Chip Deffaa has produced.
