Mark Lehman has long been a contributor to these pages and was our music editor for several years. He’s a fine composer of tonal, economical music, making his points with witty logic. This release realizes his dream of having his music on vinyl. He loves his feline friends: Sleeping Cats is a suite of five elegies for his companions over the last 40 years. `Lullaby (for Mia)’ is tender and touching, but it’s not all sentiment here: even when the other movements are slow, they still convey the arch arrogance cats are known for. The Sonatina in C is partly based on Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler, but jazzy inflections make it unique.

Valse Noire is melancholy and demure, drifting further into its reverie until a knockout punch comes at the end. The Pensive Variations are based on a perfect fifth that shrinks inwardly by a half step, a simple idea with chromatic potential. This is the most cerebral piece, but Lehman mostly keeps things moving. The pianists’ phrasing and attention to detail are commendable, and they let the music take the spotlight. The acoustic in the sonatina and variations is dry, but the other two pieces have more atmosphere.
