EAST COAST SERIES · Jazz & Swing Orchestras

Rare & Collectible Albums by Unsung Bandleaders

When the dust from the collapse of the Swing Era settled, there were few big bands left that had survived. Yet, because they loved theswinging drive of a full-on jazz orchestra, a series of adventurous and unsungbandleaders optimistically organized some fine, but short-lived big andmedium-sized orchestras that were packed with jazz and studio musicians, holding the flag of Swing high.

In 1956, a newcomer named Kent Harian assembled a blowinggroup; he handed them some clean arrangements, and produced a swinging dancerecord called Echoes of Joy. Jim Timmens did most of the arranging, with twocontributions by luminaries Bill Finegan and Gil Evans. Harian’s studio bandwas an exuberantly flagwaving outfit—and a joy to hear at that, playing thiscollection of unpretentious and swinging scores with plenty of solos spottedthroughout.

Although Big Band Swing by the Ted McNabb & Co. is oneof the most ebullient, crisply swinging and superbly performed big band albumsof the 50s, it is also one of the rarest and most obscure despite its dreampersonnel. What’s more: Ted McNabb was just the guy who raised the money. Hepaid for the charts by arranger Marion Evans, the musicians, and the studio. For him it was a dream come true; a big band in the Swing Era style, clean, precise and stomping, like the old Basie and Goodman bands, playing somestandards that hadn’t been overdone at the time.
