Wth cover art by Matisse, and packaged in a six-panel digi.PURCELL’S GRANDEST ACHIEVEMENT, HIS MOST COLOURFUL SCORE, WITH AN EMOTIONAL RANGE FROM WIT TO MYSTERY AND MUCH IN BETWEEN. “VINTAGE PURCELL, IN A PERFORMACNE THAT SHOWS NO SIGNS OF AGE, CONVEYS EVERYTHING BUT THE ELABORATE STAGE DIRECTIONS” – GRAMOPHONEIt is perfectly possible for someone listening to The Fairy Queen for the first time to be quite unaware that it was based on A Midsummer Night’s Dream. For the relationahip of the one to the other is equivalent to that of the filmed version of a 20th-century “musical” to the “book of the movie” – of, say, West Side Story to Romeo Juliet. Not one word of Shakespeare‘s text was set by Purcell: an unknown hand cut, rearranged and in some places even rewrote the play, and also provided the “lyrics” to be set to music. That there is a connection between the original and the music for this Restoration variety show is, therefore, due entirely to Purcell’s genius for evoking mood and atmosphere in this, the longest and most varied of his theatre scores. He, not Mendelssohn (or Berlioz or Britten for that matter), came closets to finding an authentic musical equivalent to the poetic and enchanted world of Titania, Puck and Oberon. This is apparent from the very opening – a miniature dance suite full of fantasy and changing moods. – John Eliot Gardiner
