Bill Evanshas been one of the most influential pianistsif not one of the most influentialmusiciansin the history of modern jazz. Everybody who likes piano music enjoyslistening to Bills playing, and that is why he is so big today, more than 25years after he died in 1980. When in 1956 he joined the quartet of theacclaimed clarinetist Tony Scott, Bills playing caused much talk amongmusicians and big things were predicted for him. When I started out, I workedvery simply, but I always knew what I was doing, said Evans of that time. Inthese early recordings as a sideman, Bill Evans demonstrates, with apparenteffortlessness and without straining for gimmicks, what a strong andintelligent improviser he already was in those early years.
