Then follows a sound of foreboding, theMORSE CODE warning the presence of enemy submarines; followed by the furyof the attack on our ships; ending with a sad theme depicting the death anddebris left by the battle.‘‘BENEATH THE SOUTHERN CROSS”-Far away from the PACIFIC in thesouthern waters of the ATLANTIC, encompassing the shores of BRAZIL, MONTE-VIDEO and other countries of South America on the Atlantic coast; another warwas in progress. Herewas documentary proof of World War II being fought on the highseas all over the world. The television viewers saw films taken fromten allied and enemy nations, films from private agencies and othersources around the world — films that men had died to take.“Victory at Sea” was previewed on the NBC Network on October 26,1952 on a Sunday afternoon. It started without a sponsor but soonafter the initial episodes, it was greeted with tremendous praise inthe press and throughout the nation. Since that time, it has beenreplayed consistently over television stations throughout the country.Richard Rodgers was commissioned to write the music for the series.At first he hesitated, but after seeing the initial run through of someof the programs, he was enthralled at the excitement and drama thatthe film clips created and he accepted the job on the spot. Neverbefore has music been so strong an element in the success of a pro-gram that is not essentially a musical program. Richard Rodgers’score contributed tenfold to the overall impact that “Victory At Sea”had on the public.
