*Description
A project to commemorate the 85th anniversary of the birth of the Met.
The world's first SA-CD release of the overwhelming performance that shines with the famous singing of Pavarotti and Sutherland!
An excellent recording by DECCA that achieves a gorgeous and luxurious sound!
This album was recorded in 1972, during the first session for Turandot, and it is a recording that attracted attention for its excellent sound recording by DECCA, as well as for its star-studded cast, including Sutherland, Pavarotti, and Caballé.
In particular, Pavarotti's rendition of Nessun dorma became his signature song, and it is a popular song all over the world.
Prior to this recording, the Nilsson-Corelli duo had performed Turandot to great acclaim at opera houses around the world, and their 1965 EMI album was a notable release in the early days of stereo recordings (reissued in 2018 as a Tower Records limited edition TDSA75. Currently out of print).
Mata had performed with this duo many times at the Metropolitan Opera, and the confidence he had in the work can be seen in this recording. It is thought that he had a good relationship with the work and a strong attachment to it, and he has left behind multiple recordings of both sessions and live performances, including videos.
From the perspective of the generational change of singers from the 1960s to the 1970s, this recording can also be said to have been a milestone for Pavarotti as he took his place on the world stage.
Even outside the main roles, the singers such as Gheorghiu, Pears, Krause and de Palma were also strong, and it seems that the 1970s was the last era when they were able to invest money and time in opera recordings, so it is certain that this is a recording of a classic opera that is luxurious and magnificent in every way, including the content and recording.
The performance is certainly one that is unique to the DECCA label, as it balances the voices of the singers while still fully demonstrating the qualities of each singer and not overpowering the orchestration, which is one of the characteristics of Puccini's final work, especially in the first act.
During the analog recording period, this meter disc played a major role, and it is also a disc that should be paid attention to even today from an audio perspective.
