Vintage 10 Pocket 78 Album 6 Decca Count Basie Bob Crosby Andrews Sisters:
$19.99

The album itself is a terrific vintage display piece. The deep red exterior features an embossed large-record-and-musical-staff motif with gold RECORD ALBUM lettering. It has exactly the kind of decorative late-1930s/1940s appearance that makes these old storage albums attractive even apart from the records inside.

Better yet, this one contains a genuinely worthwhile group of period Decca recordings rather than anonymous filler.

Included 78 RPM Records

1. Count Basie at the Piano – Decca 2722

Hey Lawdy Mama
b/w
The Fives

Recorded in 1938 and issued in the U.S. in 1939. This is probably the strongest straight-jazz record in the album. Smithsonian documents this exact Decca pairing, and period discographies identify the personnel as Count Basie with Fred Green, Walter Page and Jo Jones.

2. Bob Crosby and His Orchestra – Decca 2275

Diga Diga Do, Part 1
b/w
Diga Diga Do, Part 2

Recorded October 19, 1938. This is the complete two-part performance rather than a mismatched single side. The Bob Crosby band during this period included major jazz players including Bob Haggart, Ray Bauduc, Eddie Miller and others.

3. Bob Crosby and His Orchestra – Decca 2848

Boogie Woogie Maxixe
b/w
High Society

A very appealing Crosby swing-era coupling. The photographed side identifies Boogie Woogie Maxixe, matrix 66220, and documented discographical material dates that performance to 1939.

4. Glen Gray and the Casa Loma Orchestra – Decca 1179

I’d Be a Fool Again

b/w

You\'re Here You\'re There

Classic prewar Casa Loma big-band material featuring vocal chorus by Kenny Sargent.

5. Ambrose and His Orchestra – Decca 1901

Watching the Stars

b/w

Won\'t You Buy My Pretty Flowers

Vintage British dance-band material issued by Decca in the United States.

6. The Andrews Sisters & Burl Ives – Decca 24463

Blue Tail Fly
b/w
I’m Goin’ Down the Road

With Vic Schoen and His Orchestra.

This exact Decca issue dates to 1948. Smithsonian documents the record, and contemporary discographical references list the same coupling and catalog number.

Album

10 total pockets

6 records included

4 empty pockets

The original printed Record Index remains inside and is essentially unused aside from a small handwritten notation near the top.

The individual heavy paper record pockets remain present.

The attractive red exterior retains strong color and its embossed musical design remains very pronounced. There is normal age-related rubbing, scuffing, edge and corner wear, plus minor spotting and surface wear, all visible in the photographs.

The binding remains together and presents nicely for its age.

Record Condition

The six shellac records are included as the period contents of the album and are not being offered with a playback grade.

Surfaces show varying normal age-related marks, scuffs and scratches. Please use the detailed photographs as an important part of the condition description.

No cracks or missing pieces are apparent in the photographed records.

This is a particularly nice combination for a collector because it brings together recognizable jazz, swing and traditional popular performers in an attractive period album:

Count Basie

Bob Crosby and His Orchestra

Glen Gray and the Casa Loma Orchestra

Ambrose and His Orchestra

The Andrews Sisters

Burl Ives

The Count Basie Decca 2722 also gives this lot a stronger jazz-collector hook than I gave it credit for initially.
