Vintage 1940s Sears Roebuck and Co. Lyric Musical
Sailor Cookie Jar with Swiss Musical Movement
This is a highly collectible and unusual figural cookie jar depicting a red hair sailor in his traditional sailor uniform, complete with blue neckerchief, stripes, stars, and black shoes.
The jar contains its original Swiss musical movement, marked "Lyric Musical Creations - Swiss Movement." The movement is in excellent working condition and plays "Hail, Hail, the Gang's All Here" clearly and completely when the lid is lifted.
***1953 Provenance***
This cookie jar was purchased new in 1953 by my late mother in law who gifted it to her husband. She thought it to be an appropriate gift, as he served in the US Navy during WWII. The cookie jar has remained in our family since then.
Condition & Functionality:
* **Musical Mechanism:**
EXCELLENT. Unlike most surviving jars from this era, the internal Swiss-movement windup mechanism works perfectly.
* **Ceramic Body:**
The piece is in very good vintage condition with bright, vivid original cold paint. There are no major structural cracks or notable repairs. Shows expected light, minor signs of age and wear consistent with a genuine mid-century kitchen piece.
*The cold paint finish has only a handful of small spots with a loss of finish, and one discrete small hairline on his red hair.
*There is scattered pinpoint pitting most seen on upper back and shoulder areas of jar.
*Craze lines, most seen around the rim of the lid.
*Jar interior: Clean. There is a small cluster of discolored craze lines. The bumps in the mold, are not damage.
A fantastic, fully functional conversation piece for any vintage kitsch, Americana, or cookie jar collector. Sold as-is. Thank you for looking.
Dimensions:
* Height: Approx. 12 inches
* Width: Approx. 6 3/4 inches
