Toru Takemitsu: Piano Music - Kotaro Fukuma (Classical CD)

This release features an overview of the solo piano works by Toru Takemitsu (1930–1996), widely recognized as the first Japanese composer to attain full international status. Spanning over 43 years of his creative development, the collection highlights his distinctive synthesis of Western avant-garde techniques with traditional Japanese sensibilities, showing early influences of Claude Debussy, Alexander Scriabin, and Olivier Messiaen, alongside aleatoric practices and inspirations from Indonesian gamelan music.

Featured Works Overview
  • Romance (1949): Takemitsu's earliest surviving solo piano work, composed at nineteen years old.
  • Lento in due movimenti (1950): An early two-movement piece showcasing developing modal and atmospheric textures.
  • Pause ininterrompue (Uninterrupted Rest Nos. 1-3) (1952, 1959): Early career milestones heavily reflecting early mid-century European modernism.
  • Piano Distance (1961): An exploration of aleatoric structures, space, and silence.
  • For Away (1973): A nocturnal, meditative piece directly inspired by traditional Indonesian gamelan structures.
  • Les yeux clos I & II (1979, 1988): Atmospheric works exploring fluid imagery and tonal colors.
  • Rain Tree Sketch I & II (1982, 1992): Water-inspired sketches, with the second piece standing as Takemitsu's final work written for solo piano.
  • Piano Pieces for Children (1978): Brief, evocative character pieces titled Breeze and Clouds.
  • Litany (1989): A mature, reflective recomposition of the 1950 work Lento in due movimenti.
