09. Still I’m SadRainbow is the brainchild of guitarist extraordinaire Ritchie Blackmore who has a prolific past being a member of the instrumental band The Outlaws and later being one of the most celebrated members of Deep Purple. Blackmore’s blistering solos and mystical riffs are at the very foundation of what would later be labeled heavy blues rock and baroque metal. Listening to his creative guitar playing could be likened to taking a magic carpet ride to an astral plane. In April 1975 after the recording of the Deep Purple Stormbringer album guitarist Ritchie Blackmore announced that he was leaving Deep Purple. He would actually leave Deep Purple once theStormbringer tour was completed. Blackmore felt that Deep Purple was going in a direction that he was not interested in pursuing. Specifically, blues rock with a funky soul vibe. Blackmore was more interested in classical and baroque music and specifically merging that with rock n roll and mystical themes. Blackmore would not return to Deep Purple until 1984 for the Perfect Strangers album. After leaving Deep Purple, Blackmore was in the studio recording what was envisioned initially by him to be a solo project. However, Blackmore rounded out his musician roster with the members of the New York band Elf which included Ronnie James Dio (Vocals), Gary Driscoll (Drums), Craig Gruber (Bass) andMickey Lee Soule (Keyboards, Organ) who had been a bass tech for Roger Glover in Deep Purple and also a member of Elf. Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow was produced by the confident Martin Birch withBlackmore & Dio co-producing. Blackmore was impressed with the results of his newly assembled group who had taken this far beyond what was thought to be a solo effort. Rainbow had definitely smelted into an and had taken the music somewhere over the rainbow!Soon after working together, the dynamic duo Ritchie Blackmore & Ronnie James Dio found that they both had a penchant for all things medieval. This influenced the fantasy song writing and the medieval rock music style. Ritchie Blackmore’ s soaring guitar riffs would take center stage again, andRonnie James Dio with his powerful vocal prowess would also make for a winning combination.Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow album has a fitting cover song on it called ‘Black Sheep of The Family’ which was written by Steve Hammond and recorded by Chris Farlowe and The Hill and later by Quatermass. It was the latter Quatermass version that caught Blackmore’s attention and this incarnation. The version that Rainbow offered rocks harder and is more contemporary at heart. Also included in the track list was the perennial ‘Man On The Silver Mountain’ which has been a staple of a sumptuous rock ‘n’roll radio repertoire since it’s initial release herein. Also served up on a ‘silver’ platter (pun intended) is the ‘Sixteenth Century Greensleeves’ a rousing instrumental guitar number in the finest tradition. Other songs that should get an honorable mention because of their inclusions in many concert set lists are the favorites ‘Catch The Rainbow’ and ‘Still I’m Sad’. Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow is a foundational, influential rock album that set the stage for many acts to follow and in many ways is timeless!
