This item is a manuscript song on three sheets of paper sewn into one sheet, presumably penned by but definitely signed by Moses Ballou (1748-1833) dated January 17, 1804, Smithfield (Rhode Island). This is a Federal period manuscript. This piece is not a repro- it is authentic and original. It is a unique and significant piece of early American vernacular music and early Rhode Island family history. The Ballou family was among the earliest settlersof Rhode Island. They are primarily descended fromMaturin Ballou, aco-proprietor withRoger Williamsin the founding of the ProvidencePlantations around 1646. In regards to Moses Ballou, he is credited with building the historicBallou Housein Lincoln, Rhode Island, around 1782. The family was deeply embedded in the Smithfield and Cumberland areas. They were known as farmers, preachers, and later, influential textile mill owners. Manuscripts such as the "Farmer's Song" offered here reflect the secular interests and everyday life of a family often noted for its religious and civic leadership, including the (later and famous) Civil War officerSullivan Ballou. The (3) sheets of paper upon which the song is written were hand-sewn into the single sheet you see here. This piece is a manifest and tangible link to one of Rhode Island's founding families, and is therefore a step above other handwritten secular or vernacular songs dating from the Federal period (1790-1820).
