FYI: The Società di navigazione Italia was started in 1932 due to the widespread
unemployment of Italian ships, the Italian government encouraged the joining
of the major Italian shipping companies to become Italia Flotte Riunite (United Fleets of Italy).
The new company acquired the NGI’s Roma and Augustus, Cosulich’s Saturnia and Vulcania,
the Lloyd Sabaudo’s Conte Rosso, Conte Biancamano and Conte Grande
and their soon to be launched: Rex and Conte di Savoia.

By 1937 a rapid recovery was made and Italian shipping
was re-named Italia Societa Anonima di Navigazione.
Lloyd Triestino was incorporated into the new company. In 1940 most Italian ships were taken over for military service and by 1945, few were left afloat.
The company lost many of its ships, including the Rex and Conte di Savoia.
Four vessels survived the war: Conte Biancamano, Conte Grande, Saturnia and Vulcania.

The Italian passenger service resumed in 1947; under the company\'s new name Società di navigazione Italia.
Two new vessels, Andrea Doria and Cristoforo Colombo were commissioned in 1953 and 1954,
respectively, to re-establish the nation\'s pride. However the Andrea Doria sunk only three years after she was commissioned.
The company ordered a replacement Leonardo Da Vinci; delivered in 1960.

In the late 1950\'s the arrival of the jet aircraft had adverse effects on passenger ship travel.
In 1958, Italian Line ordered another pair of new ships Michelangelo and Raffaello, delivered in 1965.

Italian Line kept operating the transatlantic service despite losses until 1976,
thereafter the Italian Line concentrated on freight traffic.
