This 2014 Phoenix Records release is a two-for-one CD compilation gathering two classic late-1950s albums from legendary jazz trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison. Originally issued on Roulette Records, Patented by Edison and Sweetenings capture Edison in a rare leadership role - he spent most of his career as a highly sought-after sideman and studio musician rather than a bandleader . Edison earned his nickname "Sweets" for both his warm personality and his distinctive trumpet tone, which was noted for its simplicity, good taste, and superb sense of dynamics . These recordings showcase his mellow, lyrical approach to swing and standards, backed by top-tier New York jazz musicians of the era.

🎵 Album Highlights

The compilation brings together 24 tracks across two complete albums. Patented by Edison was recorded on February 12, 1960 in New York City with a quintet featuring Jimmy Forrest (tenor sax), Tommy Flanagan (piano), Tommy Potter (bass), and Elvin Jones (drums) . Sweetenings was recorded in November 1958 with a quartet/quintet including Jimmy Forrest on sax, plus either Kenny Drew or Jimmy Jones on piano . The tracklist includes jazz standards like "Tea for Two," "Ain't Misbehavin'," and "Blue Skies," alongside Edison originals such as "Candied Sweets," "Sweetcakes," "Pussy Willow," and the album's title track "Sweetenings" .

The AllMusic review of Sweetenings awarded it 3 stars, with critic Ken Dryden noting that "Harry 'Sweets' Edison added something special to any date in which he took part, but these 1958 sessions he led for Roulette are especially enjoyable" .

❤️ Why You'll Love It

The Quintessential "Sweets" - These sessions capture Edison at his most relaxed and tasteful. Unlike the high-note pyrotechnics of many trumpet contemporaries, Edison's playing is built on bent notes, warm tones, and an uncanny ability to say more with less. As the NEA noted, his style was "noted for its simplicity and good taste" .

Two Albums, One Great Price - Patented by Edison and Sweetenings are both strong sets, and having them paired on a single remastered disc makes this an excellent value for jazz collectors. The 24-bit remastering brings out the warmth of these late-1950s analog recordings .

A Window into Swing-Era New York - With personnel including Tommy Flanagan and Elvin Jones - musicians who would go on to define the next wave of jazz - these recordings offer a snapshot of the New York studio scene at the end of the 1950s. It's history you can hear.
