Chick Corea’s Elektric Band became one of the defining jazz-fusion ensembles of the late 1980s and early 1990s, combining sophisticated composition with synthesizers, electric bass, guitar, saxophone and exceptionally technical drumming.
Inside Out and Beneath the Mask capture the classic Elektric Band lineup featuring Chick Corea, Dave Weckl, John Patitucci, Frank Gambale and Eric Marienthal — a group whose virtuosity made the band particularly influential among musicians and fusion listeners.
By Paint the World, Corea introduced the Elektric Band II, featuring a revised lineup with Eric Marienthal, Jimmy Earl, Gary Novak and Mike Miller. This makes the three-CD lot especially interesting because it documents the transition between the two incarnations of the group.
The copy of Paint the World included here is also marked “Manufactured by Columbia House Under License,” identifying it as a U.S. record-club edition rather than the standard retail configuration.
