Alexander Vertinsky (1889–1957) was a legendary Russian and Soviet chansonnier, poet, actor, and composer famous for his theatrical, melancholic "Russian Pierrot" stage persona. After the Russian Revolution, he emigrated in 1920 to escape the resulting political and social turmoil. Over the next two decades, his emigration journey took him across Europe, the United States, and Asia, where he performed his poetic "miniature" songs in cabarets for Russian émigré communities and international elites in Constantinople, Paris, Berlin, and Shanghai. He eventually received permission to return to the Soviet Union in 1943, where he spent his final years as a beloved variety performer and movie actor.
