Antique Noble & Cooley Embossed Eagle Patriotic Rope-Tension Drum — 12” — Documented in 1901 Catalog

An impressive antique American patriotic drum manufactured by Noble & Cooley Co. of Granville, Massachusetts, featuring a colorful raised (embossed) eagle decoration, traditional rope-tension construction, leather tension ears, and decorative wood-burned wooden hoops.

Manufacturer Identification Confirmed

The drum has been positively identified as a Noble & Cooley product by Jay Jones of Noble & Cooley Co., following his review of photographs and the company’s historical 1901 product catalog.

The 1901 catalog illustrates this embossed eagle drum model and documents its availability in several diameters.

Mr. Jones also provided fascinating information about the company’s early manufacturing techniques. He explained that the five-color decoration was likely produced using a three-color printing press, requiring the metal shell to pass through the press twice. Noble & Cooley subsequently developed an eight-color printing press in 1926.

He further explained that the wood-burned hoops were manufactured with as many as four different decorative patterns, sometimes varying according to the customer for whom the drums were produced.

The model’s appearance in Noble & Cooley’s 1901 catalog provides valuable historical documentation. The exact manufacturing date and original use of this particular drum have not been established.
