Shipping1920s Earl Smith Trio Babe Naset Saxophone Dickey Banjo Chicago Photo RPPC
This is an original vintage circa 1923 Real Photo Postcard (RPPC) capturing a magnificent, high-contrast studio portrait of the Earl Smith Jazz Trio performing out of the historic Chicago dance band circuit. Sourced directly from a premier midwestern musical archive lot, this unrecorded view provides an exceptional, clean visual document of early twentieth-century jazz orchestration and ragtime transit history. The composition centers on the three foundational pioneers of the early Chicago hotel cabaret scene posed formally with their primary performance instruments. Seated front and center is rhythmist Richard E. "Dick" Dickey, proudly holding his open-back four-string tenor banjo. Standing on the left is celebrated composer and multi-reed soloist Clayton "Babe" Naset cradling his elaborately engraved, silver-plated saxophone, while bandleader Earl Smith stands on the right holding his performance violin and bow. The trio members are meticulously styled in tailored period day suits, starched white collars, and dark ties against a rustic, stylized outdoor forest studio backdrop canvas. The reverse side is completely unposted and blank, preserving the pristine texture of the early silver gelatin card stock. The performers featured in this exquisite portrait were fixture headliners for the prominent, high-society Eisele family estate during their frequent travels through the Chicago entertainment district. As wealthy German-American industrial barons, the Eiseles operated massive manufacturing conglomerates that placed them at the very vanguard of midwestern high society during the Gilded Age and the Roaring Twenties. Because of their immense family fortune and notable social influence, the family maintained close personal friendships and patronage with early jazz-age and vaudeville stars, collecting these promotional portrait assets directly from the ensembles during their elite hotel residencies.3.50"X5.50"good condition and details~clean nothing on back
