    Pure Waits

I've owned Nighthawks at the Diner since it was first released on vinyl in 1975. It's Waits at his best, creative, funny, clever and with a great sardonic sense, surrounded by great musicians, Michael Melvoin (piano), Jim Hughart (bass), Bill Goodwin (drums) and Pete Christlieb on tenor saxophone. It's one of those recordings I give to friends whenever I can and they always say "THANKS!"

  • Live Waits

Always meant to get this record... but it eluded me until now. Never saw Waits perform, this is as close to seeing him live as I'm gonna get.

  • Nighthawks at The Dinner

One of Tom's more accessible albums from his mid 70's period. Musically it's a musical bed of jazz/blues to compliment his excellent stories of life in general some funny and some not so funny but the way he tells his stories makes you believe that these events may happened to you somewhere along the line. This is a quasi-live in the studio recording complete with occasional crowd noise that doesn't detract from the listening experience. I rated this album five stars not that I think it's his best but for the album itself and what I get out of it. For Tom Waits fans - essential.

  • Classic Waits

It took me back to a concert Waits did at the University of Toronto in the early 80's where Waits finished a song quickly and you could hear 2,000 people tapping their feet! The crownd erupted with applause for one of the most unique artists of the last 50 years. Not only is this recording great musically, it will probably make you laugh.

  • Very Under Rated - and Very Good!

Recorded live this performance really captures Tom in those early days in Los Angeles after he'd already had a few albums under his belt. Very sure of who his stage persona was becoming, he tells some of his best stories here with the confident demeanor of a very vocal, yet somewhat tipsy bus rider backed by great little, punchy, somewhat low-key band. A bit tongue in cheek at times, but never without colorful characters and descriptions few songwriters can evoke. If you like Tom Waits at all, do yourself a favor and rediscover this classic. It really is a must.
