DANZIG's finest hour...the first album is the best!
You want to listen to Danzig? There is only one album to reach for, and this is it. Danzig, with the help of producer Rick Rubin (just as he had done with Slayer and others), took their game to a new level with this release. This debut album has to rank as one of the finest in hard rock history. In my humble opinion, the best Danzig ever belted out, and could hold its own with any other hard rock album from start to finish. - "Twist of Cain" - One of the top ten hard rock/metal songs ever recorded. The riff is so infectious that guitarist John Christ reworked it back into the song "Snakes of Christ" later on. - "Not of This World" - great song, rocks from start to finish. - "She Rides" - slow, plodding, and such a strong groove. - "Soul on Fire" - a hidden gem, one of the top 5 on ... You want to listen to Danzig? There is only one album to reach for, and this is it. Many people who don't even listen to metal can be found joining in the chorus: "If you wanna find hell with me..." - "Possession" - okay, maybe the weak link on the album, but it still is an interesting refrain. - "End of Time" - An absolute beauty of a song. The true darkhorse on this album. Poetic and haunting, with a killer groove under the lyrics. A ballad that is so intense, it's not one. - "The Hunter" - Glenn just can't resist the Elvis-like delivery... - "Evil Thing" - more dark poetry from the son of the lizard king. There would be more polished material on albums to follow, but this set remained true to the core of honest-to-goodness rock'n'roll. The boys from New Jersey are just pluggin' away in their garage with heart and soul, and deliver a thundering sound somewhere between AC/DC and Black Sabbath. A must-listen for anyone who even considers themselves a casual hard-rock fan. Another reminder that the 80's were the true heyday of heavy metal. You won't be disappointed.

Danzig is the 1988 debut album of the band led by Glenn Danzig, formerly the songwriter and vocalist of The Misfits and Samhain. The album was the first release on producer Rick Rubin's new label Def American Recordings. Def American's successor, American Recordings reissued the album in the USA and UK in 1998. This album rides the line between quirky cult niche and mainstream metal of the era. The guttural vocals and provocative lyrics of Glen Danzig ("She Rides") is a definite throw-back to a Jim Morrison and The Doors style with a slightly twisted hard metal backbone. This is no dance mix! It is a great album to pump you up as you are working or working out. This is, in my opinion, the best Danzig album out of their collection.
