Enya--Watermark
"A Day Without Rain" may be Enya's most well-known album, but "Watermark" is her strongest and finest. The tracks are: 1)Watermark: instrumental. A relaxing piano piece. We used to warm up in ballet to this song. It’s a good ease into this album. 2)Cursum Perficio: Latin. A dark, ominous piece that puts in your mind images of traveling through the woods at night. I slowly warmed to this song, especially after hearing the more sinister second half. 3)On Your Shore: English. Deep and cool, you can almost hear the waves and feel the water she sings of. A clarinet solo near the end perfectly captures the mood. 4)Storms in Africa: Gaelic. Starting delicately, it builds to a crescendo that celebrates rather than fears the storms-—it’s a cleansing, not a destructive, storm. The synthesizers ... It sounds very cold, and puts to mind walking alone through the snow and wind. A solo woodwind partway through captures the isolation and chill that the Exile feels, as she wonders if she will find a way home or if she must wander forever. 6)Miss Claire Remembers: instrumental. A piano solo, it's the only piece on this album I don’t care for. 7)Orinoco Flow: English. Enya’s most famous piece, with the possible exceptions of “Only Time” and “May It Be.” The layers of her voice thunder and take you away. Very good for fast ballet. 8)Evening Falls: English. Not one of my favorites, but an endearing song nonetheless. It plays almost as a coda to “Exile,” in which the singer has come home but “feeling so far away.” Deep and resonant. 9)River: instrumental. This piece almost exists to calm you after “Orinoco Flow.” It doesn’t build, instead staying with a synthesized, delicate theme. Nothing special, but a nice, pleasant break between two boomers. 10)The Longships: Gaelic. My, but this one is a thunderer, a powerhouse, even more so than “Orinoco Flow.” One day I put this on my surround sound system, and at the 0:25 mark when everything explodes, I felt as though I were hearing it for the first time. I got shivers, the bass and vocals were so powerful. With the drum beats and the “hmm”s of the vocals, we are put right on a Viking ship. If you have bass or surround sound, turn it up all the way for this one. 11)Na Laetha Geal M’oige: Gaelic. One of the best. I have no idea what Enya is singing about here, but no piece of hers puts me more in the green hills of Ireland than this one. It is deep, calming and filled with a kind of longing. The solo (not sure of the instrument) in the middle strikes the heart. On the original release, this track was the last one, and is a perfect way to end Enya’s best album. 12)Storms in Africa II: English. A retread of “Storms in Africa,” originally done in Gaelic, this version was added on to later editions of “Watermark.” While I prefer the Gaelic version, this rendition is fine; it noticeably adds sound effects of thunder, and the “oh”s at the end to not go on for so long, granting my wish. I was happy that Enya decided to add the English version rather than replace it here; I was very upset when she replaced the Gaelic version of “Book of Days” from Shepherd Moons with the English version, which I do not care for, instead of simply adding it as she did here. A good end to later versions of the album.

18 Years Later!
I never did know the title of the song Orinoco Flow when it was on the radio, 18 years ago. I knew I liked the song, but ID'ing the song or album eluded me! My daughter of 12 years is into music like most young ladies! She was humming a song she recently heard on the radio, and did not know the lyrics, just the tune! I immediately recognized the tune, and put the lyrics I knew to it. Voila, now we have something to look up on the internet, and find. We did find the lyrics, and identified the Artist! I have always known, that someday, I would find this piece, and we did! Now, off to eBay, to look for Orinoco Flow, on an album called Watermark, by Enya. This was all I needed to locate the music on eBay, and that I did! Not only did I find the album, but on an unopened CD, from 1989! Wow, ...
