Quality Instrumental Music for The Civil War period but lacking if you're looking for lyrics...
Overall, this is a good purchase if you're looking for quality instrumental pieces for Civil War era music. However, if you want to hear the lyrics being sung then this is not the CD for you. I recommend running an online search for each of the songs with performing artist(s) as listed on the back of the case before buying. Youtube usually pops up with a picture of this album's artwork, while the music plays (so you know it's from this disk). Alternatively, Amazon may have an abbreviated playlist, which will also confirm what I'm explaining. When first looking into what we were hoping to buy, the old Confederate songs with lyrics were our primary interest. For example, Bonnie Blue flag and Dixie. That is absolutely not what you'll find here. We still enjoy this compilation, just ... Overall, this is a good purchase if you're looking for quality instrumental pieces for Civil War era music. Twenty-five years after the "Civil War"...
Twenty-five years after Ken Burns's revelatory doc series "The Civil War," this soundtrack still gives me shivers. Yes, CD is a primitive digital format. But every track sounds nearly live through my audio set-up---a real testament to the format and to the recording/mastering engineers behind this memorable album!

The CD brings the background music of the documentary to the foreground, opening and closing with short narration. If you are a fan of Civil War history, this may bring a tear to your eye.

Piece of history, well documented. Collection of tunes that are difficult, at best, to locate and placed in a format that is convenient and a well packaged medium. Ken Burns efforts shine once again with a well thought out collection of songs that touch the human spirit of struggle and desire of commitment. The setting mimicks nothing less than the elements we struggle with today; however, maybe not on the world stage of the original setting. A lesson to remember and apply in our everyday decisions. Take to heart and reflect, a treasured collection of history in song.Piece of history, well documented.
