I was a teenager when rock and roll first hit. I listened to a lot of stuff, back then. Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Fats Domino, Sam Cooke, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, and, of course, the Everly Brothers. They had an interesting mix of country and rock and roll, and some unbelievable harmony. Lots of their stuff, often written by Felix and Boudleaux Bryant, contained lots of teenage angst and heartbreak. The Everly album, Songs our Daddy Taught Us, was a bit different from the rest of their stuff. It was basically folk songs, some of them really old, done before the folk era of the early sixties, by pop artists. I liked the haunting melodies. Naturally, when I heard that Billy Joe Armstrong and Nora Jones, two of my current favorites, were coming out with a tribute album, covering just the songs on that one album, I was intrigued. I bought it without even hearing sound samples. I was amazed when I first listened to the album. The first song was dead on. Others varied, a bit, from the original, in arrangement and style, but a great job was done on all of the cuts. I was, and still am, very pleased. If you are a fan of the Everly Brothers, Norah Jones, or Billy Joe Armstrong, you ought to buy this album. If you like interesting melodies, and some great singing of old, old, songs, you ought to buy this album.Read full review
I purchased this cd for two songs. "silver haired daddy" and "loved you oh so many years". They are as good as I have ever heard. Billie Joe and Nora harmonize beautifully. the other songs are a little weird for my taste.
