DanTalbott amphitheatre built especially for the production onthe grounds of My Old Kentucky Home in Bardstown, Ken-tucky. The opening performance on June 26, 1959 was metwith immediate critical acclaim, and since that date the delight-ful musical has played an eleven week season each summer. In reviewing the production, Robert Dockery of lhe Cincin-natFEhquifer said, “Worth a trip three times the distance fromanywhere,” and Professor J. Markov, Director of lhe MoscowArt Theatre said, “an enchanting naive theatrical quality withtrue poetry.”The production was conceived by the people of Bardstown,Nelson County, Kentucky who, in 1922^. had purchased FederalHill, as The_XHd-Kentucky^Home plantation was then known, and presented it to the Commonwealth of Kentucky as a shrineto Stephen Collins Foster. It was while on a visit lo this plan-tation that Foster was inspired to write My 01d_ KentuckyHome, now^he official State Song of Kentucky^The Stephen Foster Drama Association, a non-profit educa-tional and cultural organization, was formed lo produce themusical drama based on the life of Foster. Contributions forthe staging of lhe production were received from lovers ofStephen Foster’s music throughout lhe United States. ThePulitzer Prize winning author, Paul Green, was commissionedto prepare lhe script; and the noled arranger, Isaac Van Grove, accepted the task of preparing lhe score. The result washailed as “a tuneful earfull.”THE STEPHEN FOSTER STORY tells in dramatic formthe events of one year in the life of America’s first fulltimeballad maker, and presents lo us in a new selling a number ofhis most beloved songs. Since this is a play and not a bio-graphical account, the author, Paul Green, has adapted partsof the story. He has not done this with a view lo creating anew character, but lo making Foster and his compositions alittle more understandable lo an audience of a different cen-tury from that in which the song writer lived and worked.Says Mr. Green, “for dramatic clarity I have in certain in-stances in this play freely interpreted the facts of StephenFoster’s life, but the main course of action is authentic.”ACT ONEIn place of lhe usual instrumental overture, THE STEPHENFOSTER STORY opens with a dynamic choral arrangementof many of Foster’s best loved songs. The great singing com-pany, standing on stage, lifts its voice in a special renderingof the Overture. The voices fade, the lights in the amphi-theatre dim, and we hear the merry noise of a celebration. It is the Fourth of July^ 1849, and also Stephen Foster’stwenty-thjrcL-hixIhday.As lhe local song leader in his small community of Pitts-burgh. Stephen has been asked by Gottlieb Igoe lo preparemusical entertainment for the groundbreaking of a newfactory he is building. At the exciting and crowded ground-breaking, Stephen introduces his new song, Oh! Susanna, accompanied by Gussie Jordan. In her raucous costume andhigh steps, Gussie causes quite a sensation, and lhe gatheringis promptly dismissed.Following his hoped-for success with Oh! Susanna, Stephenplanned on escorting the lovely Jane Me Dewed to lhe dinnerbeing served in honor of the groundbreaking. Instead, he ismet with scorn from Jane and even from his own family for“composing such a song for an occasion as lhis.y(jane leaveson the arm of Stephen’s rival, the young lawyer—DudleyMorton. It is now Christmas Eve. Dr. Andrew McDowell’s family isal home. The Doctor, with Jane’s assistance, is bringing hisbookkeeping up-to-date. Mrs. McDowell confides in her hus-band that she is very much concerned about Jane’s evidentinterest in the rattle-brained Stephen Foster when DudleyMorton would be a much more practical husband for Jane. The evening is interrupted by lhe Christmas serenaders dressedin their outlandish masks. The group is led by young Stephenwho has come by to sing his newest song, OpenJThy^Dattice, ktpyfi, composed as a Christmas present to Jane. Dudley andJane join lhe revelers as they break into a noisy snake dancewinding their way through-the darkness, to Aivay Down Sou/,Oh! Lemuel, and finally Camptown Races (as Joe Aikins, anegro servant in the McDowell IrousChcrtri\'^nmortalizcd asOld Black Joe, joins the carolers.Forced to try to take his place in the busy commercial worldof business, Stephen takes a position as bookkeeper for theIgoe warehouse. But even here his music pursues him. Thelilting rhythms of the ship hands around the docks soon fillhis head with song as we hear them singing The Glendy Burke. This leads his mind further in musical exploration, and fiescribbles the melody oijTJld Folkr^T~Homelacross the ledger. We are led to believe nrarSfe\"pfi\"eh~migKthave been able toconquer his desire to compose if he had not had a visitor atjust this time. The Minstrel \'King, E. P. Christy, finds himin the office of the warehouse and buys his newest compositionfrom him for fifteen^ dollars.JStephen has relatives in Bardstown, Kentucky. Judge JohnRowan, master of the Federal Hill Plantation, is Stephen’scousin. Since Igoe would like to have the shipping contractfrom the Rowan plantation, he decides it would be good busi-ness to send Stephen down lhe river to negotiate lhe contract. On his arrival in Bardstown, Stephen is quickly caught upin the action and hospitality of the South. His mind wandersfar from the purpose of the trip, and competitors step ingelling the contract before Stephen makes his offer to hisCousin John.Amid lhe splendor of a ball on the grounds of Federal Hill,Stephen meels the beautiful Lucy LeMoyne. With her accom-paniment, they sing lhe sentimental Ah, May the Red RoseLive Ahvay, and then break inlo the happy and lively SomeFolks. The act comes to a finale as all lhe guests al the ball joinin singing Ring, Ring de Banjo.ACT TWOAs the lights dim for the second act, the chorus once againassembles on the stage for lhe Overture to Act Two. Thisoverture is a medley of Foster’s quieter and lesser known songs.Jane McDowell, or Jeanie as Stephen has come to call her,is now more lorn than ever between her love for Stephen andhis need for her and lhe promising lawyer, Dudley, who nowhas been elected Mayor. While alone at lhe piano, sheexpresses this feeling in singing Stephen’s latest song, IFillThou, Be True. Dudley Morion conies to call on Jane \"withthe \'pm’po^tT °f asking for her hand in marriage. Stephenbreaks in on them, and Dudley and Jane leave the house andgo inlo the garden.Left alone in the house, Stephen sits al the piano and singsone of his most beautiful compositions, ^[eanieJFidi.lh\'e^Li^ij(^rownTfatr^ Jeanie, in the garden with Dudley, hears Stephensinging lo her and is drawn back to his side. However.Stephen and Dudley quarrel over Jane. Dr. McDowell inter-rupts lhe fight between the two suitors and lells them thatlhe decision for marriage is up to Jane. The Christy Minstrels are in town. Stephen and his friends.Gussie, Josh, Kleber and Joe, enter the theatre just in timelo hear E. P. Christy “making a mock” of Stephen’s composi-tion, Old Folks at Home. Stephen slops the performance.Hoping to embarrass Stephen in front of lhe townspeople, E. P.Christy asks Stephen to sing the song the way it should besung. Stephen sings. Slowly, one by one, the audience joinsin lhe singing, making it truly one of the most beautiful ofall Foster’s songs. On leaving the theatre, Stephen and Dudleyagain fight over Jane, and Dr. MeDoweH foroffers Stephen sseeing her again.WithoutTane’s inspiration, Stephen cannot compose. Heloses his job, and his family and friends turn against him. Inhis loneliness, he is haunted by unfinished melodies untilfinally in a moment of desperation he hears Jeanie calling tohim. It is the eve of Jeanie’s marriage to Dudley^ UnablstMjdee^Jeanie is alone on her balcony as she sings^e«u£f/u/ DreameyStephen appears beneath the balcony and jo ins\'her in thesong.
