In themid-Fifties Red Callender began working on a series of combos with experimentalinstrumentations. One line of continuity was his use of tuba, which because ofits unexplored potential, was very close to him. His execution is clean, withgood tonal definition and technique. He thought the most important thing of allwas to be true to yourself, and he felt that everybody had a different messageand what everyone had to say was important; communication was the thing. He didall the arrangements and filled them with generous doses of good musical humor. The soloists are heavily featured and the leader plays some of the mostengaging and relaxed tuba jazz that has ever appeared on record.
