RARE FABULOUS 1963 Life Magazine INDUSTRIAL MUSICAL - All About LIFE For Sale
RARE FABULOUS 1963 Life Magazine INDUSTRIAL MUSICAL - All About LIFE:
If you've seen "Bathtubs Over Broadway" or read "Everything's Coming Up Profits," you know that private pressing "industrial musical" souvenir albums are some of the rarest and weirdest records in existence. These motivational musicals were only for dealers, salesmen, distributors and other industry insiders at sales meetings and conventions, and the souvenir vinyl records were not available to the public. And many of these shows boasted outstanding music and performances along with the bizarre corporate subject matter.I'm the collector and historian profiled in the documentary "Bathtubs Over Broadway," and the co-author of "Everything's Coming Up Profits - The Golden Age of Industrial Musicals." I'm thinning out my stash of duplicates, and offering an assortment of records that range from the scarce, to the very rare, to the "you'll probably never encounter this again."This one is "All About LIFE," a 1963 LIFE Magazine revue that played in several cities to audiences of ad men and advertising buyers. Like other media industrials (including the ABC Radio and Money Magazine shows I'm selling) this was a B to B industrial, not aimed at the company's own people. Writers Jerry Powell and Mike McWhinney did industrials for many years, and here they've turned out some sharp, tuneful numbers that boasted of LIFE's circulation and demographic desirability as well as some pointed satirical takes on topics of the day. Several tracks delve deeply into the nitty gritty of magazine production, such as "26 Market Mix" and "Flexibility," while the Calypso-esque "Which Did You Say Was Number One?" explores LIFE's enviable stats. "As Advertised In LIFE" and "Typical People" are lighthearted looks at the effectiveness of advertising and the kinds of people advertisers want to reach. And, as a palate cleanser, there are topical left turns like "Guantanamo" and "Rocky on the Rocks," about Governor Rockefeller. All done with a sprightly light touch and deft performances that make the facts and figures zoom past with elan -- a hallmark of a good industrial show.
This copy is in very presentable condition, with a bit of cover wear but excellent solid seams, and a delightfully minty disc.An entertaining, tuneful look at a bygone world of magazine publishing, and a nice example of a 60's industrial revue for your collection.Check out my other listings for many more killer examples of this deliciously strange and secret slice of American musical and corporate history, as well as an assortment of other miscellaneous weird records from my hoard.
