Card mounted photograph (just over 9 ½” by 13 ½”) of amusical band with five young men and their instruments, by Cokell ofFramingham, Massachusetts, circa 1920s. Neither the location nor the subjectsare identified. It does appear to be some sort of college or institution, judging by the fine paneling, oriental rugs, and framed photos of young men inWorld War I military uniforms. This looks like some sort of jazz band. A youngman at left has a four string banjo. Next to him, another young man sits at agrand piano. Two more with saxophones sit either side of the young man behindthe simple drum kit. There are a couple of more saxophones nearby, along with atrumpet and perhaps a couple of clarinets. These guys look like they’re readyto rock out! None of them are smiling. That’s to be expected—they had just lostsome of their friends a few years earlier during the Spanish flu pandemic. Thephotograph is in good condition with only light wear and soiling. Note therubbing and bumping at the corners of the mount. There are also a few dents onthe surface of the photograph (by the left foot of the banjo player, and dentand line by the young man with the sax at far right. The photograph exhibitsgood or better tonal range and shows good or better detail. Great early bandand musical instruments image!
