WEIGHT DRIVEN BANJO CLOCK

POSSIBLE SOUTH SHORE MAKER

8 DAY TIME ONLY

CIRCA 1830 - 1840

This is an antique weight-driven banjo clock or as they were known at the time, \"Patent Timepieces.\" It is housed in a mahogany (I think) case. Some time back, I had a New Hampshire banjo made the same way. I thought at first someone had striped the gold leaf off, but I see no evidence that it was ever gilded, and in researching it, I found that some were not. The clock is NOT signed; note however the over-sized bezel hinge, which is a characteristic of Joshua Wilder clocks. Wilder was a South Shore clockmaker, in Hingham. Another characteristic of clocks produced in that area is the use of moon hands. The ones on the clock now are period replacements (I had to use a shim on the minute hand), but stuck between the backboard and the bottom, I found part of a moon minute hand that had been there for a long, long time (see photo). The head is elliptical cut, which is consistent with Wllder clocks as well as several others. The movement is attached by diagonal thru-bolts. The chimney is also similar to Wilder chimneys, as well as to several others (reference: The Banjo Timepiece, by Chipman Ela). I think this is a late 2nd Generation timepiece, and possibly an unsigned Joshua Wilder clock, though of course I cannot guarantee that. The movement is original to the case, and the weight is an original one. The pendulum bob and rod are original. The lower glasses are replacements, and look to be home-made. I replaced the upper glass. Two of the squares on corners were missing, and I cast resin ones from one of the remaining ones. One of the side arms is cracked, and the the eagle is modern, possibly from an early 20th Century timepiece.

I completely disassembled the movement, cleaned it, restrung it, and lubricated it. The clock is running nicely now and keeping good time. It looks as though the numerals have been strengthened. Though running, I sell all mechanical and electrical devices in AS-IS condition. You still have the right to return it if dissatisfied for a refund of your purchase price, not to include shipping. The handling charge is for insurance, which is automatic. It measures approximately 31 X 10 X 4 inches, not including the finial. The handling charge is to pay for shipping insurance.

Should there be a problem with your purchase, please contact me directly through the mail system. I can and will do the same things directly that I would through , and probably more quickly.
