First rock/pop album to have an artistic inner sleeveFirst rock/pop album to have the song lyrics printed for view on back coverFirst rock/pop album to have a special Pepper's list of U.S.A. labels and various release dates (Stereo):
1st pressing (very short 3-month release) ...THE ORIGINAL: June 1-2, 1967 to ONLY September 6-7, 1967:***Capitol Records Colorband (rainbow) label(black label with rainbow colors around circle)
***"A Little Help From My Friends" listed on rainbow label as song #2, Side 1(also on back cover). This label was changed a short three months later (adding "With..." on the rainbow label title). The original unchanged June, 1967, pressing is the true indicator of the very first USA release. The back cover listing did not change.***Nomention of MCLEN on back of album cover, bottom far right corner (added in September '67 pressing)
***Nomention of " A subsidiary of Capitol Industries" in small print on outer edge of label near rainbow colors (added in 1968 pressing)
***Nomention of NEMS anywhere on the album cover (this one is very quirky)
  • The addition of the NEMS (Northern Songs) credit to The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" stereo album cover occurred shortly after the album's release in 1967 (and before the MCLEN credit was added in September, '67). The initial pressings of the album (both MONO and STEREO) did not include the NEMS credit, which was an oversight. NEMS was the publishing company owned by Brian Epstein, The Beatles' manager, and they wanted to ensure proper credit on the album. As a result, subsequent pressings of the stereo album cover were updated to include the NEMS credit. The exact date of this correction may vary depending on the pressing and location, but it was relatively soon after the album's release. MONO version added NEMS credit in lower left corner on red back of album somewhere between late-June, July-August '67 prior to lower right addition of MCLEN credit on back of album cover in September, '67. On the stereo version, the NEMS credit is found on the back red cover, lower right corner, but printed in very small print, vertically up the spine.
  • No NEMS credit, no MCLEN credit indicates a very early June/July '67 first pressing.
  • NEMS credit with no MCLEN credit indicates a likely (also very early) July/August '67 release, prior to MCLEN being added in early September, '67.
  • Both a NEMS and MCLEN credit indicate a pressing after early September, '67, into '68 (the '68 version will have the LP with rainbow record label with "A subsidiary of...." on the label.)
***Upper right back (red) corner, SMAS 2653 (catalog # only;notan absolute indicator of a first pressing)
***Front cover with yellow band at top with STEREO printed in the middle in bold***Thin cardboard insert of Sgt. Pepper cutouts included***Inner LP slip-cover in red/pink/white psychedelic design (1967 and 1968 only).

*****"Sgt. Pepper broke the mold....."
*****"Relieved of the rigors of touring, The Beatles settled into the studio to push the envelope of modern pop music. The result was 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band,' released June 1, 1967, a conceptual and sonic masterpiece that is considered by many critics the most influential album of all with full insurance. USA only.
