Tapes in this group were produced by several companies, including Columbia, Command, ABC-Paramount, United Artists, Crescendo, and Reprise.

The Revere stereo tape cartridge was introduced in late 1962 for use in the 3M Revere M-2 tape cartridge machine. The M-2 had an automatic changer mechanism for the cartridges of which up to 20 could be stacked for up to 15 hours of playback.

Each cartridge contained enough 1⁄7-inch stereo tape for 48 minutes of playback at 1⅞ inches per second. When a cartridge was loaded, the tape was pulled out and threaded by the machine onto a take up spool inside the unit, and once playback was finished the tape was rewound back into the cartridge before it was ejected and the next cartridge loaded.

Pre-recorded content was available from over a dozen record labels including Columbia Records and the M-2 tape cartridge machine also had two microphones for recording, for which blank cartridges were available. It was designed to be portable, despite weighing 32 lb, and had two built in speakers.

In 1964, the M-4 model was launched with separate speakers and a walnut and teakwood case.

It’s unclear how long the stereo tape cartridge system was produced for, but the Revere-Wollensak division of 3M continued to produced standard open reel tape recorders, at a fraction of the cost of the M-2 and M-4.
