Kay USA Tenor Banjo Military Army 19 fret Grover 2-tab tuners US labeled case For Sale
Kay USA Tenor Banjo Military Army 19 fret Grover 2-tab tuners US labeled case:
This model does not show up in any Kay catalog. It is thought to have been sold in military PX stores. I could find no firm information.
This one has Two-Tab Grover tuners installed--these typically are associated with the 1930s and are prized for restoring older and very expensive Gibson banjos.
The banjo is in relatively nice condition with scattered scratches. The finish is all original on the neck and resonator. Tortoloid binding on the resonator is in good shape.
The aperture for the neck heel in the resonator needs to be relined with felt.
The case is an arch top case with "US" stenciled on the top. All latches and handles work and unlike most cases of this era there is little edge and end wear.
Action seems a little high, but the neck angle on these is easily adjusted.
There are several versions of this banjo. This one uses the short tension hooks. Many of the hooks/nuts on this banjo have been changed out.
Some of these had flanges made of zinc that cracks and swells. The flange on this banjo is free of any cracks and remains round.
