One of the most popular songs of the 19th century, with music by Henry Tucker, "Sweet Genevieve" is one of the few surviving songs by George Cooper. Composed in the late 1860's, the lyrics concern the real-life Genevieve, Cooper's wife who died shortly after their marriage. The lyrics were sold to the musician Henry Tucker, with whom Cooper also collaborated on such other songs as 'Rose of Killarney' (1876) and Civil War songs 'Weeping, Sad and Lonely' and 'When This Cruel War Is Over.' Cooper collaborated with many other composers of the period, including Stephen Foster, and their friendship (or relationship) in the last few months of Foster's life has been well documented. It was Cooper who discovered the body of Foster on the Bowery the day before the composer died, and Cooper informed Foster's family of his death.
