The Ding Dong Devils--like many of today’s generation--have long been fascinated by the intertwining of Tiki/South Seas culture and Outer Space. During the World War II South Pacific battles between Allied and Axis forces, island natives suddenly began to witness giant boxes falling from the skies filled with food, drink, clothing and ammunition, to replenish air bases being built on their islands. After the war, these islanders created “Cargo Cults,” building replicas of airplanes, tanks and other military objects in order to induce the Gods to drop more goods. Erich von Däniken’s 1968 best-selling novel “Chariots of the Gods” (and subsequent documentary) put forth the concept that ancient astronauts visiting earth had a hand in assisting early civilizations with many of the world’s great wonders--most notably the giant Moai heads on Easter Island. The relationship between marooned castaways on Pacific islands and marooned astronauts in outer space was noted by the makers of the 1964 film “Robinson Crusoe on Mars.” This was echoed in Disney’s 1966’s “Lt. Robin Crusoe, USN,” in which a Navy pilot bails out into a tropical island, and comes face to face with an angry Tiki god.
With their new album “Space Fezcapade,” the Ding Dong Devils tackle the subject of Tikis in Space, while tipping their fezzes to such space music pioneers as Les Baxter, the Ventures, Joe Meek, Jimmie Haskell, the Spotniks--even David Bowie. The album combines many musical genres such as surf, jazz, rockabilly, early 60’s soul-dance rock, country, bossa nova, punk/new wave and exotica into the Ding Dong Devils own unique astral stew. “Ku vs. the Space Monster” instrumentally puts Hawaii’s God of War into battle to save the world from a flying creature so abominable, even the fertile minds of Tokyo’s Toho Studios couldn’t have created it. “Marooned on Space Atoll 13” makes the connection between stranded castaways, left with nothing but a bottle of rum delivered by tidal currents, and stranded astronauts, struggling to subsist on floating space food sticks until the inevitable rescue--or not? Erich von Däniken’s theories are saluted in “Twistin’ Spaceman of Rapa Nui.” Late night radio conspiracy theorists, dance-crazed Peppermint Lounge denizens, and those who favor overproof tropical cocktails all meet up on “The Area 151 Swizzle.” The strange concoctions devised by interplanetary cocktailians are the subject of such songs as “Greetings from Crab Nebula Cocktails” and “Blame it on the Croatoans,” and alien dance practices are studied in the jazzy “Can You Dance to It on Mars?”
“Space Fezcapade” is the third album from the Ding Dong Devils, formed in 2009, who continue to bring their fun-loving music to live events across the country, the world, and up into the Crab Nebula.
