During thelate Fifties, Detroit saw the emergence of some of the finest neo-bop jazzmen,among them Curtis Fuller and Sylvester Sonny Red Kyner, two of the most significantyoung-blood representatives of the movement. Fuller, a 23-year old disciple oftrombonist J. J. Johnson, displayed, even then, full command of his horn,playing with a vibrato-less style, flowing conception and a slightly greaterdynamic range than his mentor.

Sonny Red,25-years-old at the time, was a Birdcalling shouter, with a pungent attack,fierce drive and a truly Bird-inspired emotional strength. These 1957 quintetrecordings amply illustrate the wealth of talent emerging from Detroit thatleft its invigorating mark on the New York scene in the late Fifties.
