19th century. This unmarked example retains early, if not original raw hide drum heads which are now discolored and somewhat warped and misshapen. The staves retain original red paint. Carrying strap or shoulder straps are absent however drilled holes remain intact. The bands are painted in a terracotta red. The drum side has two rows of brass tacks centering a circular tack decoration. An interesting detail is that one of the drum heads has extensive markings in pencil script. These seem to be several names of individuals who perhaps were members of the particular marching group of the time; most names are underlined and several names are circled and appears in most cases these are first names. There are no dates accompanying them at all. It’s an interesting piece of folk art really. SIZE: 14” h x 16-1/2” dia. FFO125D
