Charlie Beverly began playing the Dobro in the early 1930's, learning from Sam McGee who is now a Grand Ole Opry Star. Before the Dobro Charlie played the guitar and banjo his first instrument being a banjo which was made of boards by his grandfather. Charlie was twelve years old at that time and that began his love for Early American music known as Blue Grass.

During World War II, while in Europe, he and other entertainers used a flatbed truck for a stage.

He has performed with some of the best, such as Bob Hope, Lana Turner, Betty Grable, and many others. He learned a lot by playing recordings of other artists.

His wife Eileen says you can find him picking at 8:00 am, or 12:00 midnight.

Charlie joined the String Music Association (SMA) which was founded. by Howard D. Wolfe in Roanoke, Virginia. He started the Association to preserve Early American Music which Charlie has truly become a part of.

In the Foothills of the Appalachian Mountains where Charlie lives, he picks with many people and his music is enjoyed by all.

On September 21, 1972 at Berryville, Virginia, Charlie won the Virginia State Dobro Championship. Then again on May 27, 1973, he won the championship for the second consecutive year. On June 23, 1973 in Appamattox, Virginia, he played with the best in the nation and won the National Championship. On July 28, 1973 at Gray Station, Tennessee, he won the Tennessee State Championship and on August 5, 1973, he played with people all over the world and won. Now Charlie Beverly is the World's Champion Dobro Player.
