Brian May's Red SpecialThe Old Lady
Work on the original Red Special began in 1963 and was carried out by Brian May and his father, Harold. Most of the wood came from an 18th century fireplace mantel with the body constructed fromoak and blockboard with a mahogany veneer. The neck was hand-shaped and finished with anoakfretboard with inlays created frommother-of-pearlbuttons.
Threepickupswere installed with a custombridge and the tremolo was created from a steel knife with two motorcyclevalvesprings. To reduce friction the bridge uses rollers which allow the strings to remain in tune.
Originally the guitar had a built in distortion circuit, adapted from a mid-1960’seffects unit and the switch for this was in front of the phase switches. Brian soon removed it and the switch hole is now covered by a mother-of-pearl star inlay.
