From the day the Pilgrim Fathers traversed the Atlantic Ocean in the early 17th Century, European folk music continued heading westwards for several centuries. The early settlers moved out into the Carolinas, Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee and took their music with them, composing new songs about their everyday life to the old tunes that they had brought with them. The music became entrenched in the rural areas of these states and eventually became known as "mountain music" or "country music". It was played on stringed instruments, mainly the fiddle and guitar and provided entertainment at home and at weekends when folks gathered together for dances. And there the music stayed until the advent of the gramophone and 78 rpm records as well as radio in the early part of the 20th century.
